How to beat... The Shaving Rash!!

Feeling the burn?

Most of us are – shaving is harsh on the skin and often leaves us feeling pretty sensitive, red and sore.

Want to show the razor whos boss?

Follow my rules…

1. Ditch the shaving foam!

Cosmetic companies making us think were being holier than thou for using a product dedicated for the task in hand – Boo to them!

The very fact that they foam are because they contain ingredients to make them so – these are usually quite harsh and aggravating. Placed on to damaged skin is taking the path straight for ‘face on fire’

Swap the foam out for a gentle cream cleanser or a non foaming cleansing gel. Here are my faves for the job..

AlumierMD Sensicalm Cleanser £28

SensiCalm  is a smooth, hydrating cleanser that delicately removes impurities and excess oil while calming skin. Yucca root extract is a gentle natural cleanser; niacinamide, ceramides, vitamin E and sunflower seed oil moisturize, leaving skin smooth, soft and intensely hydrated. Aloe soothes skin and calms redness.

The Perfect Cleanser £65

With azelaic acid to reduce skin inflammation. Cools and soothes , promotes healing of inflamed lesions such as acne and rosacea. Added glycerin and anti-oxidants hydrate and protect .

2. Exfoliate!

Exfoliation is simply the process of removing lingering dead skin cells. Removing these cling ons means a smoother shave and also helps to avoid acne and those annoying ingrown hairs.

We have our own exfoliation process by way of enzymes, but these enzymes can’t function properly in shave damaged skin.

Exfoliation is a commitment and must be done regularly – it’s a blog post in itself!

On body areas a simple buff with an exfoliating mitt will do the job – you can be quite vigorous with this method, provided your skin is on the healthy side – then follow up with a smoothing body lotion such as ….

The Perfect Body Lotion £65

  • Hydrating Glycerin and Shea Butter
  • Retinol for anti-ageing benefits for the entire body
  • Glycolic Acid exfoliates to correct imperfections and brighten skin

3. Heal and soothe

Ever heard of Hinokitiol  - well you have now and it’s one of AlumierMDs hero ingredients. Its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antifungal, ANTI-EVERYTHING!

Its as gentle as it is powerful and will soothe that irritation quicker than you can say Jack Robinson.

Also incorporate some niacinamide in to your regime - it is the ultimate healing ingredient! I love it and literally bathe in the stuff! It encourages the production of ceramides, which form a protective barrier and prevent water loss – it’s the answer to any skin trauma and helps protect from further damage and this brilliant all-rounder is waaay too often overlooked.

Want both these ingredients in a convenient, ultra-luxurious soothing ahhhhhh feeling balm?
